Are you familiar with personality type profiles? Do they help you manage relationships? I’ve studied many personality type systems and I’m a big fan. Understanding personality types can help us release unrealistic expectations, communicate more effectively, and improve our relationships with ourselves and with others. (Including relationships with adult children as we discussed last week.)
1. Understanding Personality Types Can Improve Your Relationship with Yourself
One of the foundational principles of the DreamBuilder Program is that you are worthy and deserving of having what you desire and your desires are leading you to your best life. However, most of us were not brought up to believe this. In fact, we were taught that we are not OK and our desires are not OK. Learning about my personality type provided me with many validating, ah-ha moments.
Knowing your personality type can help you:
- Know yourself better
- Love yourself the way you are
- Be free of other people’s opinions
- Allow yourself to do what makes you happy
- Create a life of fulfillment and joy
That’s huge!
2. Understanding Personality Types Can Improve Your Relationship with Others
When we understand other people’s personality types, it is easier to let go of expectations that cause frustration. It’s easier to accept that they just are the way they are and it’s OK.
We are able to:
- Understand people better
- Love them the way they are
- Be free of the need to judge them
- Support them in making themselves happy
Just think about the massive amounts of time and energy that are freed up when we release our judgments and frustrations with other people!
3. Understanding Personality Types Can Help You Find Compatible Relationships
When you know the strengths and challenges of various personality types, you can more easily find the best match for:
- Lovers/partners
- Friends
- Employees and
- Business partners
Pretty Amazing, right?
Popular Personality Type Frameworks
Some of the personality frameworks that I’ve studied are:
The Clifton Strengths, particularly, made a difference for me in the way I perceive myself. I believe my life would have been more fulfilling and my relationships with my parents would have been much closer if we had known this information. (I shared more about that in this blog post.)
However, I have referred other people who didn’t think the results were accurate. One of the potential pitfalls with personality frameworks is that it’s fairly common for people to not answer the questions accurately and skew the results. Sometimes it’s helpful to get the assessment another person. I love being able to do that for my students in the DreamBuilder Program.

Introduction to the Myers-Briggs Personality Framework
Recently I came across a fun podcast by a business coach who has a unique and very helpful approach to identifying your type. He recommends that you draw four dials, like gas gauges on a car dashboard (one for each of the personality categories). Then mark a position on the gauge that represents where you are, as he describes the characteristics of the personalities on each end of the spectrum.

Discover your Myers Briggs by asking yourself the questions
If you aren’t familiar with any personality profiles yet, this podcast by James Wedmore will serve as a great introduction.
Listen to the podcast on his website and answer the 4 questions.
And if you are unhappy with the work you are currently doing or if you are thinking about starting a business you will get some great ideas. There is a PDF that you can download too.
I think you will enjoy his enthusiasm and his extensive knowledge of the Myers-Briggs Framework as much as I did.
